Sousse slaughterhouse case: Four people sentenced to three years in prison

The Sousse 1 criminal court delivered its verdict on Friday October 10, 2025 in the case of the municipal slaughterhouse of Sousse, pronouncing a three-year prison sentence against four people, including a veterinarian stationed at the slaughterhouse and head of the markets department at the municipality.

The case dates back to a control operation which revealed serious irregularities and infractions, in particular uncontrolled slaughter and the absence of health controls. Several sick sheep, close to death, had been discovered – some already slaughtered – and appeared destined for distribution to local markets.

Each of the accused was also fined 70,000 dinars, in addition to the prison sentence.

In September 2025, the prosecution ordered the preventive detention of the four suspects. The involvement of a municipal veterinarian, responsible for market control, had raised serious questions about surveillance and health safety at the slaughterhouse.

Local authorities promised at the time to strengthen control measures to prevent further incidents of this type.
