The prosecution of the Sousse 1 court of first instance ordered the detention of four people, including a veterinarian of the municipal slaughterhouse, accused of having participated in the slaughter and the circulation of sick sheep. The case broke out after a control operation which highlighted serious health offenses.
According to the first elements of the investigation, this is an anarchic slaughter, carried out without appropriate veterinary supervision. A batch of weakened sheep and close to death would have been partly shot down and intended to be sold in the local markets.
Municipal officials involved
Among those arrested is a veterinarian occupying in parallel the function of head of the municipal market service of Sousse, which raises suspicions of serious shortcomings in the chain of control.
Faced with irregularities, the prosecution decided to place the four suspects in preventive detention, pending judicial investigation. Local authorities claim that additional control measures will be put in place to prevent such incidents from happening again.
