An Egyptian court condemned, this Wednesday, July 16, 2014, seven men in life prison for sexual assault on Tahrir square in Cairo, some of which were committed during the celebrations marking the victory of Abdel Fattah al-Sissi in the presidential election, reports AFP.

The court also decided on a 20 -year prison sentence for two other men. Life prison terms in Egypt correspond to a period of 25 years.

The nine convicted people will also be placed under police surveillance for a period of five years after serving their sentence, according to the verdict of the court.

Among the victims, let us recall the case of this mother sexually assaulted by a group instead of Tahrir during the celebration of the inauguration of Abdelfattah al-Sissi.

The 30 -year -old, accompanied by her daughter, had been surrounded on June 3 by several individuals carrying white weapons which wasolated her in a place and then naked, before assaulting her sexually.

“They took the woman to a mosque not far away, where she was attacked and undressed. Then they beat her, and when she tried to escape, boiling water was thrown on her, injuring her seriously. The attackers surrounded and attacked him sexually until the police arrived, “said the prosecutor.

A few days later, on June 8, several women, aged 17 to 42, were attacked by the same group of men.

According to a study, published, in 2013, by the United Nations, 99% of Egyptians suffer or have suffered from sexual harassment. But, in Egypt, violence against women have often been unpunished and no man had been tried for group rape.
