Customs officers at the Ras Jedir border post have foiled a major smuggling attempt involving nearly a million dollars in foreign currency and several gold bars.
The seizure was made on Friday in a vehicle about to leave Tunisian territory, according to the General Directorate of Customs. The case was immediately transferred to the security services upon authorization from the public prosecutor.
Customs officials discovered $945,700, equivalent to approximately 2.8 million dinars, carefully hidden in a vehicle bound for Libya. The intervention also made it possible to get their hands on six gold bars with a total weight of 14.6 kg, a particularly high quantity confirming the structured nature of the operation.
A detention report was drawn up on site, in accordance with current procedures. After consultation, the public prosecutor ordered the transfer of the file to specialized security services to deepen the investigation and identify the networks potentially involved.
This seizure is part of a series of operations carried out in recent months on the southern borders, where trafficking in currencies and precious metals remains one of the main vectors of financing parallel networks operating between Tunisia and Libya.
Customs claims to be strengthening its control systems in order to limit these illicit flows, which fuel an underground economy with a strong impact on the financial and security stability of the country.
