Tunisia and the World Cup, a 44 -year -old story

Tunisia will start this Tuesday, November 22, 2022, against Denmark, its sixth participation in a World Cup.

Five previous participations at the end of Tunisia signed only two successes. For his baptism of fire in 1978 during the Argentinian “Mundial”, the Tunisians had also snatched their first victory against Mexico (3-1).

We had to wait for the 2018 World Cup in Russia for Tunisia again to victory. It was against Panama (2-1).

Tunisia has played 15 games for 14 different opponents. Review of his participation, two victories in Argentina and Russia and nine defeats for four parities.

But Tunisia remains the African first nation to have won a World Cup match. On June 2, 1978, the Ghommidh, Agrebi, Tarek, Temime, Naïli, Kaabi, and others were beating Mexico on the score of 3-1.

Thanks to this victory which has become historic and a “mundial” which has become a point of reference in Tunisia, FIFA granted a second place to the African continent from the World-82 in Spain where Algeria and Cameroon made good figure.

The first by beating the future finalist, West Germany (2-1), the second in draw with the future world champion, Italy.

Tunisia, first African Nation to win a World Cup match, it was then followed by Algeria which won two successes against the FRG and Chile (3-2) and could have gone to the quarterfinals without the shameful arrangement between the Germans and the Austrians.

In 1986 in Mexico, Morocco will however do better by becoming the first African country to qualify in the second round. In the first round, Morocco will snatch two draws against England and Poland and beat Portugal (3-1). In the round of 16 he will bow to the FRG in the 87 ′ (0-1).

In 1990, Cameroon became the first African country to reach the quarterfinals. In the round of 16, he had beaten Colombia (2-1) before losing in an epic match against England in the quarterfinals (2-3).

The feat of Cameroon will be repeated by Senegal in 2002 and by Ghana in 2010.
