The Turkey first division football championship was suspended on Monday evening, after the lynching of a referee at the end of a meeting, during which he was notably struck by the president of the Ankaragücü club.
After the assault of the referee of the Süper Lig match between Ankaragüçü and Rizespor last night, the Turkish Federation announced the suspension of all its championships until further notice and decided to sue the president and the players of Ankaragüçü, authors of this violence.
At the end of the game, referee Halil Umut Meler was struck by the president of the Ankara club, Faruk Koca, and beaten on the ground by the players of the same club.
Following this incident, the Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, announced on the social network X the arrest of three men, including the president of the Ankaragücü club. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also reacted by condemning the attack on referee Halil Umut Meler.
