Since its creation, the Tunisia Football Cup has been presented under the name of “Cup of the President of the Republic”. An appellation that does not please Kais Saied.
Created in the aftermath of independence, the Tunisia Football Cup, one of the two major titles, brought into play each year, is presented under the name of “Cup of the President of the Republic”. An appellation used all over the world since in France, the cup is called “Cup of the President of the Republic”, in Spain, is the “King Cup”, etc.
But this name does not appeal to the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, who sees it as a form of populism. During a meeting held on Friday evening at the Palais de Carthage, with the Minister of Youth and Sports, Kamel Deguiche, Kais Saied called to replace the name given to this trophy by “Tunisia Cup” instead of “President’s Cup”, stressing that “the era of the personalization of power is over”.
As a reminder, the president of the FTF, Wadii Jary, had decided in 2019 to baptize the last five editions of the Tunisia Cup with the names of national personalities and political leaders who played a role in the independence of the country.
He not only summoned Minister Kamel Deguiche to change the name of this cup. Kais Saied drew up his minister the little glorious record of what was accomplished in the field of sport at the time when Kamel Deguiche prides himself on honorable results.
Everything went there. The state of a certain number of sports facilities which “need to be restored or which are unexploited due to many overruns and corruption”, as well as the disappointing results of national teams despite the huge sums of money mobilized.
And in Kais Saied to recall the glorious past of certain athletes who have marked the history of Tunisian sport and who “trained in young houses and obtained much better results than those who train abroad or in luxury hotels”. And also evoke the lack of sports spaces, etc.
In addition, the FTF proceeded to draw the draw of the sixteenth finals of the Tunisia Cup.
