The principle of the five team changes instead of three, in a match was “validated definitively” by the International Board (IFAB), guarantor of football laws, this Monday, June 13, 2022 in Doha (Qatar).
Introduced following Covid’s pandemic, this principle will therefore be continued in all matches organized by FIFA and in national competitions.
IFAB members also “decided to increase the maximum number of replacements on the match sheet from 12 to 15 at the discretion of competition organizers,” it said in a press release.
In October 2021, the guardian of the laws of the game had left the choice for each competition to adopt the five changes per game or not.
This amendment to the “law 3” of football, usually providing for a maximum of three replacements per match, had been decided in May 2020 by the IFAB.
