The Brazilian, who wrote the history of football, died today at the age of 82, struck down by colon cancer that had worsened in recent days, cardiac and renal failure forcing him to return to São Paulo hospital in palliative care.
EDSON ARANTES DO NASCIMENTO, born October 23, 1940 in Tres Coraçoes in Brazil, played until his 37 years in football, was three times world champion with La Seleçao (1958, 1962 and 1970). A unique feat to date.
He had started his career as a professional player in 1956 in Santos, and joined the Brazilian selection, with the famous number 10 in the back, the following year, at 17 years old.
Pelé had been admitted to the hospital on November 29 for respiratory infection following COVID contamination, and for re -evaluation of his anti -cancer treatment, the chemotherapy he followed having apparently been ineffective.
