Ons Jabeur is starting his adventure today at the Wimbledon tournament, opposite the Swedish Mirjam Björklund. Even if our tenniswoman wins this majestic cut, she will still be penalized and will lose points in the WTA ranking.
Ons Jabeur, second in the standings, will indeed be classified 5th after Wimbledon. Who does the fault? To the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Explanations …
The points in the ranking are the total of the points brought back by the players annually during official tournaments. Each time a player begins a new tournament, we withdraw the points collected in the same tournament the previous year and replaced them with the points won during the new tournament.
The organizers of the Wimbledon tournament decided to exclude the Russians from the 2022 edition, following the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. ATP and WTA therefore decided to penalize the tournament by withdrawing the points from the rankings.
The idea was to push the organizers to return to their decision to exclude the Russians. However, the British held out. Result: all participants, including our national ONS, will be penalized and will be removed from the points at the ATP and WTA rankings, regardless of their results.
Ons Jabeur will lose 430 points since she played the quarter -finals during the 2021 edition, which will cost her 3 places in WTA rankings. Its competitors, apart from Aryna Sabalenka, did not provide a good service at Wimbledon 2021.
On the men side, it is Novak Djokovic, holding the title, which will be the most penalized since it will lose 2000 points in the ATP ranking.
The 2021 edition of the Wimbeldon tournament will certainly be penalizing for the participants, but this does not detract from the value of this Grand Slam, nor to its important “prize money”.
The winner (simple gentlemen and simple ladies) will pocket a check for 2 million pounds, or around 2.35 million euros.
