CAN 2023: Tunisia puts its title back into play!

It was yesterday that in Cairo started the 24th edition of the African Volleyball Nations Championship. Tunisia, title holder, is the main favorite with Egypt, organizing country.

The Tunisian volleyball selection, title holder, was paid into group B at the end of the draw made on Saturday in Cairo. The National Six will evolve, indeed alongside Mali, Tanzania and Chad and will open in front of the Malians today.

This 24th edition of the African Nations Championship, brings together 15 nations divided into four pools (A, B, C and D). The first two of each group qualify in the quarterfinals.

Effective

Italian coach of the national selection Antonio Jacob has selected 14 players, namely: Khaled Ben Slimane, Marouane Mrabet, Elyes Karamosli, Aymen Bouguerra, Osama Ben Romdhane, Mohamed Ali Ben Othmane, Hamza Nagga, Ali Bangui, Taieb Karbasli, Mohamed Ben Youssef, Ahmed Kadhi Agrebi, Slim Mbarki and Saddam Hemissi.

Track record

With 11 titles won, Tunisia remains the most titled country in front of Egypt (8), Cameroon (2) and Algeria (2). It was also crowned in the last three editions (2017, 2019 and 2021).

In 2017, Tunisians won Cairo by beating Egypt in the final (3-0). In 2019 in Tunis, the National Six had beaten Cameroon 3-2. The latest edition of the African Nations Championship, disputed in Rwanda, was also won by Tunisia in front of Cameroon (3-1).

Note that between 2005 and 2015, Egypt dominated African volleyball with 6 titles won, including four finals won against Tunisia.

Group A: Egypt, Algeria, Burundi
Group B: Tunisia, Mali, Tanzania, Chad
Group C: Cameroon, Kenya, Ghana, Libya
Group D: Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal, Gambia

Tuesday September 5 at 3:00 p.m. (HT): Tunisia – Chad
Wednesday September 6 at 1:00 p.m. (HT): Tunisia – Tanzania
