During the plenary session devoted Monday morning to the environmental and health situation in Gabès, Minister of Health Mustapha Ferjani declared that there would be “no tolerance towards those who have failed in their duties” towards the region.
He denounced the repeated failures in the management of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) and the lack of accountability of public institutions, a situation he described as “unjustifiable after decades of laissez-faire”.
Technical failures and shared responsibility
According to Ferjani, 95% of the current damage is due to a lack of maintenance and structural neglect accumulated over the years. “The reforms were not impossible, but they were never seriously undertaken,” he regretted.
According to Mosaique fm, the minister announced that the rehabilitation plan for the chemical complex will be carried out in a concerted manner, involving both the government, Parliament and local civil society.
Presidential follow-up of the file
Ferjani specified that the President of the Republic is personally following the file and that he had already visited Gabès to give his instructions on the rehabilitation of the complex. However, the minister acknowledged that a delay in execution has hampered the effective implementation of these directives.
