The restoration and valuation work of the emblematic site of the Aghlabides basins in Kairouan, officially started on Monday, announced Hamadi Abdallah, secretary general responsible for the management of the Kairouan municipality.
In a declaration to the TAP agency, the manager said that this vast project, lasting 24 months, began with the installation of the site around the monument. A coordination meeting was held at the town hall, bringing together all the parties concerned, followed by a field visit to delimit the space reserved for the work.
This major project is carried out by the Presidency of the Republic and will be supervised by the Directorate General of Military Engineering, in partnership with the National Institute of Heritage (INP).
Exhausting an area of 14 hectares, the work predicts an in -depth restoration of the basins and the establishment of a modern hydraulic system allowing the constant renewal of water, thus avoiding any stagnation. The project also includes the layout of green spaces irrigated by a drip system fueled by water from the basins, as well as the complete renovation of the site enclosure.
According to Hamadi Abdallah, this historic site will find its tourist and heritage vocation, while becoming an attractive public space, accessible to all age groups.
It will respond to the standards of a modern park for families and visitors, Tunisian as foreigners. Particular attention will be paid to lighting, water management and resilience to the effects of climate change.
