The data from the Tunis Transport Society (TRAU) highlight the extent of the losses of the company due to the rescuers, amounting to 20 million dinars per year. The percentage of these offenders represents 40% of the total number of passengers on the different lines of the company.
The figures, reported by the Assabah daily in its edition of this Sunday, March 31, 2024, reveal that the reduction in the size of the fleet and the worsening of the phenomenon contributed to a drop in direct income from the company, from around 70 million dinars in 2010 to only 40 million dinars in 2022.
The same source also underlines that the significant deterioration of the difference between income and operating costs is due to the lack of increase in prices, in accordance with the policy aimed at preserving the purchasing power of citizens. The price freezing had an estimated financial impact at 700 million dinars during the period 2011-2020.
It should be noted that the debts of the company amounted to 1880 million dinars in 2022, including 230 million dinars towards banks and suppliers of spare parts, in addition to the difficulties in honoring commitments to public suppliers.
Let us remain in the same context to indicate that in December 2021, the vice-president of the European Investment Bank (BEI), Ricardo Mourinho Felix, then on a working visit to Tunisia, had indicated that a budget of 45 million euros will be disbursed for the benefit of the TransTu to renew its fleet.
