Following the arrest of workers in Sbikha, the UGTT calls for a general strike in Kairouan to defend union rights and demand their release.
An exceptional administrative commission was held this Wednesday in Sbikha, in the governorate of Kairouan, after the arrest of the local secretary general and four workers from a local factory. They are called upon to appear tomorrow in court, accompanied by 22 workers, according to Sami Tahri, deputy secretary general of the Tunisian Labor Union (UGTT), in a declaration to Diwan FM.
Faced with this situation, a rally is planned tomorrow in court, as a sign of protest against the transformation of a social conflict into a judicial case. According to Sami Tahri, the UGTT also announced local and sectoral strikes in the various delegations of Kairouan, which will lead to a general regional strike. This movement claims the defense of union rights and workers, the release of detained persons and the resolution of the conflict in a framework of reconciliation.
The date of the general strike will be set later by the regional structures, depending on the evolution of the situation, said Sami Tahri.
