After several years of blockage, the Gaz du Sud project in the Kardhabe area under the Ghomrassen delegation, located nearly 5 km from the town of Tataouine, shows significant progress of 36%, according to Ghomrassen delegate, Abdelatif Seboui.
The work, frozen since 2022 at only 7%, resumed in June 2025 and is now continuing without interruption. This strategic project intends to strengthen national production and connect Tataouine to the gas network.
Resumption of work after a long project freeze
The delegate from Ghomrassen explains that the work, suspended since 2022, was relaunched in June 2025 as part of the reactivation of major energy projects. In a few months, the progress rate increased from 7% to 36%, giving new dynamism to a project considered a priority for the region, reports Mosaique fm.
The project is based on the exploitation of natural gas from the Nawara field and includes several major components: a gas processing station in Kardhabe, a gas bottle filling unit, as well as a 94 km pipeline linking Tataouine to Gabès. The whole represents an investment estimated at 500 million dinars, confirming its strategic dimension for the national economy.
Connect Tataouine to the network
According to Seboui, the project aims to increase the national supply of natural gas and improve infrastructure in the south. The gas pressurization operation on the transmission network in Tataouine began in June 2025, the first step towards complete connection of the region to the national network, responding to a long-standing local demand.
Beyond its energy impact, the project should generate new jobs during and after the construction phase. Local authorities believe that the entry into service of these installations will directly contribute to the economic development of Tataouine and the improvement of the social climate in the region.
