Several representatives of national organizations, professional structures and components of civil society in Sfax observed, yesterday Thursday, a sit-in of anger before the town hall of the region to express their dissatisfaction with the deterioration of the environmental situation that the region has known for more than a year.
This situation was amplified following the trigger last Tuesday of a fire in the discharge of the Port route, closed since October 31.
This fire caused the emission of dioxins (carcinogen gas), which aroused the concern of citizens. Number educational establishments and administrations have closed their doors due to the emanation of these gases.
According to the representative of national organizations, professional structures and components of civil society in Sfax, Slim Marrekchi, “this day of anger is the beginning of a series of protest movements which aims to make the voice of the inhabitants of Sfax heard to the central authorities, particularly in the face of their persistent silence and the disengagement of their responsibilities towards the governorate”.
“In the event that the authorities do not find a radical solution to this thorny problem, the inhabitants of Sfax threaten to boycott the next legislative elections and to organize a large protest movement on the Kasbah place or before the headquarters of the Ministry of the Environment,” he warned.
