The first ecological unit called “Espace de l’Environnement” has just been inaugurated on Friday in Douar Hicher, governorate of Manouba.
The creation of this unit, which includes a collection and sorting point of waste, is part of a sustainable waste management project which, in turn, is part of a partnership agreement between the National Waste Management Agency (Anged) and the municipalities of Tabarka, Siliana, and Douar Hicher.
During the inauguration of this unit, the Minister of the Environment, Leila Chikaoui indicated that this project is part of the national waste management strategy which aims to promote the recycling and recovery of waste and to raise awareness of citizens of the importance of preserving the environment.
In a declaration to the TAP agency, she indicated that her department is resolved to generalize these selective sorting experiences in the various municipalities and the districts of Tunisia and to eradicate anarchic discharges.
According to the director general of Anged, Habib Belacheb, this project is one of the components of the first phase of the project “Together for integrated waste management” funded up to 69 million euros by the Fraunhofer Institute, which continues up to 2024.
The mayor of Douar Hicher, Mokhtar Gharbi indicated, for his part, that two other ecological units are about to be created, adding that a waste transfer center will also be made in Jbel Ammar, Douar Hicher, on an area of 5 thousand m2.
The center will ensure the recycling of waste from the municipality of Douar Hicher, the quantity of which amounts to 130 tonnes per day and guarantee the rights of the ragpickers.
