The Jebel OustâBir Mcherga industrial zone, in the governorate of Zaghouan, is preparing to take a strategic step forward in the energy transition. The Industrial Zone Maintenance and Management Group announced, during its second ordinary general meeting of 2025, the creation of a photovoltaic energy production field extending over an area of ââ13 hectares.
The project aims to supply green electricity to the 150 industrial companies located in the area. According to Mohamed Naceur Laabidi, treasurer of the group, this initiative is part of a proactive approach to integrating renewable energies and promoting the green economy, while providing a concrete response to the increase in energy production costs borne by manufacturers.
According to preliminary studies, the solar power plant should have an installed capacity of 8.5 megawatts, for an annual production estimated at nearly 14 gigawatt hours. The overall cost of carrying out the project exceeds 25 million dinars, an investment considered structuring for the competitiveness of the industrial zone and the reduction of its carbon footprint.
Improve the quality of the local environment
Beyond the economic impact, the project aims to improve the quality of the local environment, by limiting greenhouse gas emissions and providing a healthier environment, both for businesses and for neighboring areas.
The regional authorities have, according to the head of the group, expressed their willingness to support the project by facilitating legal, administrative and financial procedures, in order to accelerate its realization. The group’s management also says it is open to proposals from the various stakeholders, including the civil society structures of Jebel Oust and Bir Mcherga.
In a national context marked by the search for sustainable energy alternatives, this initiative positions the Zaghouan industrial zone as an emerging model of solar integration in the service of industrial performance.
