The Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) announced the programming of several major environmental projects in the El Mdhilla delegation, for a total amount of 140 million dinars. These initiatives aim to reduce the ecological impact of industrial activities and strengthen local development.
A green shift for El Mdhilla factories
During a working session held at the headquarters of the Gafsa governorate, the regional director of the GCT, Abdessalem Chwaya, specified that these projects concern in particular the conversion of the sulfuric acid unit of the Mdhilla 1 factory to a double absorption system with heat recovery; the energy transition from heavy fuel oil to natural gas; and the creation of a water desalination unit by reverse osmosis.
These operations are part of the group’s environmental strategy, aimed at modernizing its facilities and limiting polluting emissions.
Emissions reduction and industrial rehabilitation
The GCT also provides for the development of the phosphogypsum storage area with an insulating polyethylene layer; the installation of gas washing systems for sulfuric acid and triple superphosphate production units; as well as the planting of a green belt around the group’s factories in Mdhilla.
Among the projects already launched is that of the environmental rehabilitation of the sulfuric acid unit, the call for tenders for which was published last July. Its cost amounts to 82 million dinars and it aims to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions, save energy and reduce sulfur consumption.
Social actions for the region
Beyond the environment, the GCT affirms its societal commitment through several local initiatives: the rehabilitation of six primary schools in Mdhilla, the development of the municipal stadium, the increase in subsidies granted to the sports associations of El Mdhilla and Borj Akerma, as well as the acquisition of a scanner and an X-ray machine for the local hospital of El Mdhilla.
The meeting devoted to these projects was chaired by the governor of Gafsa, Slim Frouja, in the presence of regional officials and representatives of the industrial group.
