The judicial examination aimed at suspending the polluting activities of certain units of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) in Gabès has been postponed once again, from November 13 to 20, 2025, according to the Stop Pollution collective. This is the second postponement in a month, when the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy was due to present its report to the court.
Urgent litigation
The case, handled within the framework of summary proceedings, involves industrial units accused of causing serious pollution affecting the health of local residents. According to Mehdi Talmoudi, lawyer representing the group of plaintiffs, the GCT had already requested a first postponement in October in order to remove the case from the summary procedure, a rapid procedure adapted to urgent situations. The collective insists on the competence of the summary judge to rule without delay on this matter.
The case is based on a significant volume of medical evidence: 300 certificates, including 30 filed in court, attesting to the direct health effects of pollution on the local population. The State, owner of the complex, is also involved in this procedure.
Citizen mobilization and pressure on justice
While the hearing was postponed, several dozen demonstrators gathered in front of the administrative court, expressing their support for the plaintiffs and demanding the closure of the polluting units. Among them, residents of Gabès, environmental activists and representatives of local associations chanted slogans calling for environmental justice and denouncing the continued degradation of their living environment.
