The court of first instance of Gabès has decided to postpone until November 13 the examination of the summary appeal aimed at suspending the activity of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) in the region, at the heart of a heated environmental protest.
According to Me Mounir Addouni, president of the regional section of the Bar Association, the postponement was granted at the request of the defenders, who requested additional time to prepare their pleadings, reports the TAP agency.
The appeal, filed on October 17, calls for the immediate suspension of polluting activities at the Gabès industrial complex, accused for years of causing severe environmental degradation and harming the health of residents.
A social climate under tension
This legal case is part of a context of growing mobilization. In recent days, several demonstrations have taken place in front of the governorate headquarters, where citizens and environmental activists have demanded a permanent shutdown of the GCT’s polluting units.
At the same time, six people arrested during these protests appeared before the correctional chamber on Wednesday. Two of them were fined 500 dinars, while the other four cases were postponed until December 3, with the persons concerned remaining at liberty.
Other ongoing procedures
According to Mr. Addouni, four other people, including three minors, were presented before the investigating judge and released. Three other defendants will appear next Wednesday, accused of participating in an unauthorized gathering likely to disturb public order.
Other people, placed in police custody or in immediate appearance, must still be heard by the prosecution.
