The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, received this Monday, April 7, 2025 at the Palais de Carthage the governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), Fathi Zouheir Nouri, which presented the financial statements of the institution for the year 2024 as well as the statutory auditors.
During this interview, the Head of State held a firm discourse on the role of banks in the application of Tunisian laws. He said that “what is given by the right cannot be taken up under any pretext by the left”, a metaphor emphasizing the irreversibility of economic commitments made by the State and the need for financial institutions to respect the decisions in force.
By this formula, Kaïs Saïed seems to send a clear warning to banks, in particular to public establishments. He insists that if the State grants financial facilities or takes measures to stabilize the economy, they must not be called into question by banking policies that would cancel these efforts. According to him, this is a commitment to respect to guarantee the stability and economic sovereignty of the country.
The president also called on banks to engage in what he described as a “battle for national liberation”, a term that illustrates his vision of an economy where financial institutions must play an active role in revival and national development.
Recalling the distinction between autonomy and independence, Saïed clarified that the Central Bank, although autonomous in monetary management, remains subject to state policies and has the mission of supporting the national economy.
The interview also focused on mastery of inflation, an indicator that the president considers as proof of the success of “pure national choices”. According to him, these results testify to the country’s ability to overcome economic challenges through sovereign and independent decisions. However, he insisted on the need to continue these efforts to guarantee continuous improvement in the economic situation.
