Mohamed Barakati, Deputy Secretary General of the General Union of Tourism, Crafts and Trade (UGTT) revealed that the recent period was marked by a wave of layoffs in the tourism sector, affecting several regions and hotels. This situation comes in anticipation of future revisions in the Labor Code, in particular changes in contracts and the regularization of employees.
Barakati, quoted by Echaab News, said that, for example, in the Sousse region, between 400 and 500 hotel employees were dismissed. This operation took place after the first discussions on the revisions of the Labor Code and their passage to the Parliament, pushing certain employers to precede the reform in dismissing all employees not yet regularized.
Similarly, in the regions of Médenine and Djerba, around 250 employees were dismissed, while in Nabeul, the layoffs concerned between 400 and 500 workers.
Mohamed Barakati called on the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Inspections to publish a clarification or a press release on what is happening in several private sector establishments, in particular in the tourism sector, where a wave of layoffs began to avoid the regularization of contracts in accordance with the new labor law.
He considered that the revision of fixed -term contracts is acceptable and positive for employees, but deplored that some employers have tried to bypass the law in dismissing employees before the entry into force of the new legislation. He wondered about the role of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Inspections in the prevention of these massive layoffs which seriously affected employees.
Other statistics confirm that this wave of layoffs have also affected several other sectors.
