The National Water Operating and Distribution Company (SONEDE) has developed an action plan to guarantee water supply during the summer of 2025. This program, which includes 97 interventions through the different regions of the country, requires a global budget of 55 million dinars.
The initiative is mainly based on the strengthening of water resources, through the development, electrification and equipment of 57 deep boreholes. In addition, several dilapidated distribution networks will be rehabilitated, and maintenance operations will be carried out to renew certain pumping equipment.
SONEDE also coordinates with STEG in order to anticipate possible power cuts, while providing for the commissioning of the Sousse seawater desalination plant before the summer of 2025.
According to a state of progress presented during an information day at the Ministry of Agriculture, 75 projects are currently being executed, while nine others are in the market approval phase. However, four projects are stopped due to citizen oppositions to the achievement of boreholes.
Regarding the 57 projects dedicated to strengthening water resources, 18 boreholes were completed and are in the connection and electrification phase, with a production capacity of 279 liters per second (24,000 m³ per day). In addition, 35 boreholes are still in progress, while four are suspended due to land disputes.
With these efforts, the SONEDE hopes to reduce the risk of water shortage and ensure stable supply during the summer season.
