Tunisia produces 10,000 tonnes of waste every day, part of which will soon be transformed into electricity thanks to a STEG pilot project. The Minister of the Environment also details measures to combat illegal dumping.

A pilot project to produce electricity from waste

The Minister of the Environment, Habib Obeid, announced Thursday, November 13 that Tunisia generates 10,000 tons of waste per day, spread over 16 controlled landfills.

As part of a joint initiative with the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG), a pilot experiment will be launched to transform part of this waste into electrical energy.

The coastline and wild dumps under surveillance

During the plenary session devoted to the environmental mission, Habib Obeid stressed that the ministry’s resources remain insufficient to develop the entire Tunisian coastline. Aid of 60 million euros will be mobilized by the Coastal Protection and Development Agency (APAL) according to a plan established by experts.

Concerning illegal dumps, the minister confirmed coordination with the Ministry of the Interior for their closure and strengthening of control. He also indicated that the decree relating to alternative fuel is being finalized and will be published soon.
