The Ministry of Finance has put into operation a digital platform allowing you to pay car circulation tax for the year 2026. The announcement marks a new stage in the dematerialization of tax services in Tunisia. But, for the moment, only certain vehicles are affected by this online procedure. Ordinary motorists will still have to wait.
Since the beginning of January, users can access the official portal of the Ministry of Finance dedicated to the electronic payment of the automobile sticker. This site was designed to allow taxpayers to pay road tax without physically going to the finance office, with a view to administrative simplification and reduction of queues.
An operational platform, but partially accessible
In fact, however, the platform currently only allows payment of the “single compensation tax on the transport of people and goods”. This tax concerns exclusively vehicles whose tonnage exceeds five tonnes, in particular trucks, coaches and other heavy vehicles used in professional transport.
Owners of passenger cars, motorcycles and small utility vehicles cannot yet finalize their payment online, despite the official opening of the service.
The implementation of this new payment method results from a joint decree of the Ministries of Finance, the Interior, Transport and Communication Technologies, published in the Official Journal in December 2025. This text entered into force on January 1, 2026 and provides for the gradual generalization of secure electronic payment of the vignette.
The system maintains, at this stage, the possibility of paying the tax according to the traditional procedure with the tax services, while waiting for all categories of vehicles to be integrated into the digital system.
Gradual end of the badge on the windshield
Another major change introduced by the reform: the gradual disappearance of the sticker badge which had to be affixed to the windshield. From now on, proof of payment, whether in electronic or printed form, is authentic during checks, in accordance with the new provisions in force.
This development is part of a stated desire to modernize the tax administration and adapt to digital standards.
A generalization announced, but expected by motorists
The Ministry of Finance ensures that the platform will be gradually enriched to cover all categories of vehicles. The objective is to ultimately allow all Tunisian motorists to pay their annual road tax entirely online.
While waiting for this generalization, the partial launch of the service leaves a taste of unfinished business for many users, who hoped to be able, from this year, to avoid traditional administrative procedures and their constraints.
