On the occasion of the 3ᵉ United Nations Conference on the Ocean in Nice, Tunisia reaffirmed its commitment to the ecological transition. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Ali Nafti, pleaded for a Mediterranean alliance in the face of marine erosion and called for concerted solutions to preserve coastal ecosystems.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, pronounced, on June 11, 2025, the official declaration of Tunisia during the plenary session of the 3ᵉ United Nations Conference on the Ocean, which is currently being held in Nice, in France.

On this occasion, the Minister reiterated Tunisia’s firm commitment to implement his national ecological transition strategy, an integrated roadmap which aims to protect the coast and sea areas, while encouraging the development of the blue economy. This strategy is consistent with Mediterranean and African environmental initiatives.

In his intervention, Nafti highlighted the urgency of acting collectively in the face of the effects of climate change, in particular elevation of sea level, coastal erosion and the degradation of marine ecosystems. He thus launched an appeal to international solidarity and the creation of a new alliance between the Mediterranean countries, in order to strengthen the protection of ecosystems based on nature -based solutions, gentle protection methods and the mobilization of human, financial, scientific and technological resources.

The Minister also highlighted the role of Tunisia in the preservation of marine biodiversity, recalling that the country houses the regional activity center for specially protected areas (CAR/ASP), a key body in the sustainable management of protected sea areas. He also praised the achievements of the trustee fund for protected marine areas, created in 2015, which supports cooperation projects currently covering 20 marine and coastal reserves in the Mediterranean.

By presiding over the Tunisian delegation to this global event, Mohamed Ali Nafti brought the voice of Tunisia as an actor committed for a sustainable marine future, stressing that the protection of the ocean is inseparable from human development, climate justice and regional ecological stability.
