Tunisia – Weather: Intense rains forecast for the center and the south, increased vigilance

The National Institute of Meteorology announces a marked rainy episode from Tuesday evening, with accumulations of up to 60 mm and strong winds. The central and southern regions are the most exposed, and authorities are calling for caution over the risk of local flooding.

Thunderstorms from Tuesday evening in several governorates

The rainy episode will begin Tuesday evening and continue on Wednesday in the central and southern regions, according to the INM. The expected accumulations will vary between 20 and 40 mm, locally reaching 60 mm in the governorates of Sfax, Gabès, Médenine and Sidi Bouzid. Gusty winds will accompany the thunderstorms, making travel tricky, particularly on rural roads and in low-lying areas prone to water accumulation.

Local authorities recommend that residents remain vigilant, limit travel and report any dangerous situations. Civil protection services are closely monitoring the evolution of the episode and are ready to intervene if necessary.

A continuation of stormy activity Thursday in the southeast

The episode will continue on Thursday in the South-East, with temporary stormy and locally heavy rain. Farmers and infrastructure managers are urged to secure their facilities and prepare for another day of heavy rainfall.

The center and the south regularly experience this type of episodes in autumn, made worse by poorly absorbent soils and rapid urbanization. Repeated alerts in recent years have shown the vulnerability of certain areas to flash floods and flooding.

Residents in urban and rural areas should remain cautious, especially around major roads and low points. Local authorities recommend following weather reports, protecting exposed property and respecting safety instructions issued by civil protection services.
