The National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) organized, this Thursday, October 23, 2025, in Tunis, a workshop dedicated to the presentation of the results of the study on the national potential for energy recovery from waste in priority sectors. This event is part of the project “Support for the acceleration of the energy transition in Tunisia (TETA)”carried out in collaboration with GIZ, the German Agency for International Cooperation.
The meeting took place in the presence of Nafaa Baccari, general director of ANME, and Mohamed Khaoued, coordinator of the Energy and Climate division at GIZ, as well as several executives from the agency and representatives of the sectors concerned.
The strategic study, carried out by Tunisian and international experts, delivered promising results. In particular, it analyzed successful experiences in France and Germany, while evaluating the technical, economic and environmental potential of technologies such as anaerobic digestion and incineration with energy recovery. Two preliminary feasibility studies were also carried out in Tunisian companies operating in the dairy and agri-food sectors. This work led to the development of a national strategy and a roadmap to 2050 for the development of this emerging sector.
This initiative is part of the country’s desire to achieve several key objectives:
- Accelerate the energy transition through the integration of new sustainable energy sources;
- Improve public health reducing the environmental impacts of landfills;
- Attract investments by establishing a favorable regulatory framework;
- Strengthening the circular economy by transforming waste into energy and economic resources.
Through this approach, Tunisia reaffirms its concrete commitment to a just and sustainable energy transition, combining environmental protection, innovation and economic development, while actively contributing to international efforts to combat climate change.
