Tunisia: Towards the multiplication of the number of detoxification centers

Tunisia is facing a worrying rise in drug and alcohol consumption among adolescents. The finding was confirmed by Dr. Nabil Ben Salahresponsible for the addiction file at the Ministry of Health, during his intervention this Thursday, October 9, 2025 on national radio.

According to the data presented, cannabis consumption among young people aged 15 to 17 has exploded, going from 1.5% in 2016 to 8% in 2021. The phenomenon is not limited to illicit drugs: the consumption ofalcohol also affects 8% adolescents, while smoking rate went from 22% to 30% over the same period.

These figures reflect a real vulnerability of minors to addictive behavior, in a context marked by social fragilities, a lack of prevention in schools and a trivialization of consumption in certain environments.

Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Health is preparing a new strategy based on strengthening national network of care centers dedicated to addiction.

Imminent opening of a new center at Wardia

Dr Ben Salah announced theimminent openingfrom next week, of a specialized center at Wardiain Tunis. It will be added to already existing structures, in particular:

  • Razi Hospital (The Manouba)
  • Manouba – Manflouri medical assistance center
  • Center of Jbel Oust
  • Specialized clinic in Sfax

A strategy for decentralization of care

In order to meet growing demand and relieve congestion in current centers, the ministry is planning the establishment of new regional centers in several governorates: Monastir, Gafsa, Jendouba, Le Kef and Kairouan.

The objective is clear: to offer medical, psychological and social monitoring nearby, particularly to young people in schools, often deprived of listening or rapid intervention structures.
