The fifth criminal chamber specializing in terrorism affairs near the Tunis court of first instance announced, Friday, the postponement of the trial of the “conspiracy 2” to Tuesday July 8, 2025. According to a judicial source, this decision aims to allow the official formal notice before reading the judgment.
Friday’s audience, which took place in a tense climate, was entirely devoted to the pleadings of the defense lawyers. These lasted more than nine hours, extending an intense judicial week, after interrogation of the defendants started last Tuesday.
The case dates back to August 2023, when the anti -terrorist accusation chamber near the Tunis court of appeal had ordered the dismissal of 21 people to the specialized criminal chamber. The accusations relate to crimes of a terrorist nature, in particular the formation of a criminal agreement and the conspiracy against the security of the state. This sensitive file implies a total of 42 people.
Among the main accused are leading political figures. Rached Ghannouchi, former president of the Parliament and historic chief of the Ennahdha movement, is currently in detention as part of several files. Youssef Chahed, former head of government, is the subject of an international arrest warrant and is considered to be on the run.
Other known figures are also cited in the file, such as Nadia Akacha (former head of the presidential cabinet), Lotfi Zitoun, Maher Zid, Mouadh Ghannouchi (son of Rached Ghannouchi), Mustapha Khedher, Rafik Bouchleka (former Minister of Foreign Affairs), Abdelkarim Laabidi, Habib Ellouze, Kamel Guizani, and Mohamed Rayane Hamzaoui.
In September 2023, the judicial center for the fight against terrorism had issued international arrest warrants against twelve accused, many of whom are still wanted by the Tunisian authorities.
