Tunisia: The State wants to “coach” future brides and grooms

During a general session devoted to examining the budget of her ministry, the Minister of Family, Women, Children and the Elderly, Asma Jaber, unveiled a measure which could mark a turning point in family policies in Tunisia. She announced that 2026 will see the start of the first axis of a national plan dedicated to strengthening family cohesion: a national program for evaluation and preparation for marriage.

The minister explained, in response to questions from deputies, that this program will primarily aim to support young people and future spouses in building a solid marital project. The objective is twofold: to rehabilitate the place of marriage among younger generations and to offer structured support to those who are preparing to take this step.

This future system will take the form of sessions and workshops intended to prepare couples for the realities of life together: communication, conflict management, financial organization, parenting, rights and duties within the home.

According to the minister, it is a prevention tool designed to anticipate tensions, support couples in their early years and, beyond that, reduce early separations which affect many young households.

This announcement is part of a broader national plan, currently being finalized, aimed at strengthening family ties and adapting public policies to the social transformations the country is experiencing. According to the ministry, the rise in marital conflicts, the fragility of young couples and changing lifestyles now make institutional and professional preparation for marriage necessary, beyond the traditional family framework.
