The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) identified 18 assaults against journalists during the month of May 2025, according to the monthly report published Wednesday by its monitoring unit.

Targeted journalists work for 14 press bodies, including 9 Tunisian media and 5 foreigners. The reported cases relate to four electronic sites, four radios, four televisions, a daily newspaper and a news agency.

A total of 16 journalists (10 women and 6 men) were affected by this violence. The report reports four physical assaults, four cases of harassment, two legal proceedings, two intimidation, verbal aggression and editorial interference.

The alleged authors of these acts are varied: security agents, civil servants, online activists, citizens, but also teachers, local officials and members of the government.

Faced with these drifts, the SNJT calls on the Assembly of People’s Representatives to guarantee journalists’ access to their work, in particular at the meetings of parliamentary commissions, in order to ensure better transparency of the debates.

The union also urges the presidency of the government to lift circulars hampering access to information and automatically publish data of public interest.

The Ministry of the Interior is invited, for its part, to strengthen the protection of journalists during the demonstrations and to keep responsible the agents involved in violence. He is also called upon to reactivate his crisis unit dedicated to coordination with the SNJT.
