The new Bâtonnier of Lawyers, Boubaker Bethabet, said in a declaration in Mosaic, on the occasion of his official takeover of functions on Thursday, September 18, 2025, that the next step will be based on the strengthening of the role of defense and the protection of the independence of justice, considering them as two essential pillars to build a modern democratic society guaranteeing rights and freedoms.

Bethabet stressed that the Tunisian lawyer, with its history and its male and female figures, will continue to be a support for the citizen as well as for economic and social institutions in the defense of economic, political and family rights. He highlighted that lawyer is not only a professional affair, but a national cause linked to the process of democratic reform.

He also indicated his commitment to reform the structures of the profession and the lawyer of the lawyers, and to work for the adoption of new legislation reinforcing the fundamental guarantees of a fair trial. He considered that his election, marked by a strong participation of lawyers, gives him a heavy responsibility towards his colleagues and towards society.

Belthabet said that the Council of the Order will soon look at the situation of the profession and the search for solutions to several pending files, like the situation of lawyers prosecuted under decree 54. He said that the defense of freedom of expression and freedom of the press is an integral part of the defense missions.

He finally insisted that lawyers will remain a bulwark for the defense of democratic values and the guarantee of the rule of law, calling for closer cooperation with the institutions of the State and civil society with a view to reform and development.
