The Minister of Health, Mustapha Ferjani, underlined this Monday, June 2, 2025 the need to set up a national strategy and a new vision to encourage birth in Tunisia.
This initiative, according to him, must respond to the indicators revealed by the general population and housing census of 2024.
During a plenary session in Parliament, the Minister warned against the decline in the birth rate, unveiled by the latest statistical data. He said that his department is actively working to improve population growth indicators, essential for the country’s socio-economic equilibrium.
Mustapha Ferjani also recalled that an obstetric gynecology service can only be viable if it records at least 300 births per year, according to recognized scientific standards. A threshold that may no longer be reached in several structures, given the current drop in births.
The results of the 2024 census, published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), confirm a disturbing trend: the progressive aging of the Tunisian population. The proportion of people aged 60 and over increased from 5.58 % in 1966 to 16.88 % in 2024, revealing a deep change in the demographic structure.
Faced with this reality, the authorities are called upon to act quickly to restore a lasting demographic balance, in particular by implementing incentive policies in favor of parenting.
