A man died on Saturday during an operation carried out by the Tunisian army against an attempted smuggling in the military buffer zone of Remada, in the south of the country, the Ministry of National Defense announced on Sunday.
According to an official press release, military units intercepted a smuggled vehicle which had entered the prohibited military zone in the Tiaret sector, falling within the governorate of Tataouine. The occupants of the vehicle did not obey stop signals or warning shots, which led the soldiers to carry out neutralization shots in order to immobilize the vehicle.
The search of the vehicle led to the seizure of contraband goods and the arrest of three Tunisian nationals. One of them, hit by a bullet, died on the spot, specifies the same source.
The case was referred to military justice. The two other individuals were handed over to security forces, while the seized goods were placed under seal pending further investigations.
