The European Commission presented A draft budget 2028-2034 which provides for a tripling of resources dedicated to migration management and border control. This proposal, if it materializes, could open the way to a significant increase in financial aid intended for Tunisia, a strategic partner in the Mediterranean region.

The European Union plans to allocate almost 34 billion euros to the management of migratory flows and to securing its borders, an amount three times higher than that of the previous multi -year budget. According to Ursula von der Leyen, this increase reflects the need for a collective response to increasing migratory pressures.

Tunisia, a privileged part of the EU

Tunisia already benefits from a substantial financial support of the EU in this area. In 2023, European aid included approximately 100 million euros in grants and near 900 million euros in loansconditioned in particular to the implementation of economic and social reforms.

This support aims to strengthen Tunisian capacities for:

  • Modernize its maritime and terrestrial surveillance equipment,
  • Train your security forces and coast guard,
  • Strengthen the fight against smugglers,
  • Improve social support for migrants.

With the triplely of European funds, Tunisia could benefit from a significant strengthening of these resources.
