On Wednesday, May 4, 2025, the “A” digestive surgery service at the Rabta hospital, under the direction of Dr Montassar Kassem, implemented an advanced technique in the treatment of complex abdominal cancers.
This method, called chip (intra-peritoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy), combines targeted surgery with the administration of heated chemotherapy directly in the abdominal cavity.
Used for the first time in Tunisia and unique in its kind in North Africa, this technique is part of a multidisciplinary approach aimed at improving the management of patients with certain forms of cancer deemed difficult to treat. It consists of removing visible lesions before infusing a chemotherapeutic product heated to 42 ° C, in order to strengthen the efficiency of local treatment.
The introduction of this method to the RABTA hospital marks an evolution in the field of oncological surgery in Tunisia and could contribute to expanding the therapeutic options available at the national level.
