Tunisia – Kasbah: a battery of recommendations for the pharmaceutical sector

The government’s chef, Sarah Zaafrani Zenzri, presided over Wednesday, September 3, 2025 on Wednesday, at the Palais du Government at the Kasbah, Restricted ministerial council dedicated to governance and improving the quality of the health system.

When opening the session, it recalled the importance of the right to health and the quality of medical services, guaranteed by the Constitution, stressing that the State must ensure prevention, care for all citizens and provide the means necessary to guarantee the safety and quality of health services.

It insisted on the need to strengthen the health sector, improve its efficiency and performance, and guarantee everyone access to public care, in particular free treatments for people without resources and limited income families, while ensuring social security coverage. According to her, improving the quality of the health system is an absolute priority for the state.

The Council mainly focused on the governance of the pharmaceutical sector. Several measures have been adopted to rationalize medication management, ensure continuous supply, guarantee their availability for everyone and maintain the sustainability of the system.

The main recommendations adopted are:

  • Strengthen the financial resources of the Tunisian central pharmacy.
  • Intensify control over the pharmaceutical system to improve its governance.
  • Follow the supply of the local medicine market via a digital platform to improve distribution and management of inventory.
  • Reduce the time to examine requests for marketing authorization (MA) for imported drugs without generic equivalent to Tunisia.
  • Overall revise the health insurance system.
  • Set up new mechanisms for more efficient management in the pharmaceutical sector and carry out a complete digital transformation.

In conclusion, the government’s head of the government stressed the importance of ensuring continuous supply of drugs, guaranteeing pharmaceutical security and supporting the development of local pharmaceutical industries.
