The University of Tunis El Manar and the Japanese University of Electronic Communications (UEC-Tokyo) have just reached a major milestone in Tunisian-Japanese scientific cooperation. An agreement signed on Wednesday provides for the creation of the first joint professional doctorate in electronic and industrial engineering, a first in Tunisia.
An academic alliance for applied innovation
During the signing ceremony held in Tunis, in the presence of several university officials, the two institutions formalized their partnership in the field of electronic communications engineering.
This doctoral program, designed on a professional model, will allow each doctoral student to be supervised by both Tunisian and Japanese researchers, while collaborating with a partner company.
According to Moez Chafra, president of the University of Tunis El Manar, this agreement aims to strengthen applied research and promote technology transfer to Tunisian industry, particularly in the sectors of electronics, telecommunications and systems engineering.
An internationally oriented academic ecosystem
In the same context, Mr. Chafra announced the upcoming signing of a cooperation agreement with the People’s Republic of China, as well as the preparation of new partnerships with the European Union, the United States and Canada.
The University of Tunis El Manar, already recognized as the first national and Maghreb university, is in 41st place at the Arab level according to the QS 2025 ranking. It brings together 15 university establishments, 109 research laboratories and two centers of excellence: the Pasteur Institute of Tunis and the Institute of Agronomic Research.
