Jaouhar Ben Mbarek, detained in connection with the so-called “plot against state security” case, has been on a wild hunger strike since midnight, refusing to eat, drink and take medication.
According to the defense committee, this extreme gesture constitutes an act of protest against a trial deemed unfair and unfounded, described by the detainee as an “impossible trial”. Already suffering from hypertension and showing the first signs of diabetes, Jaouhar Ben Mbarek thus exposes his health to a vital risk.
His lawyers denounce a strategy of attrition and a slow elimination of political opponents, made possible by prolonged detentions and detention conditions considered degrading.
The so-called “plot against state security” case dates back to February 2023, when several political figures, lawyers and activists – including Jaouhar Ben Mbarek, sentenced to 18 years in prison – were arrested and accused of conspiracy against power.
The authorities suspect them of trying to overthrow the regime or of undermining national security, accusations that the defense considers unfounded and politically motivated.
The next adjournment of the case is set for November 17, 2025.
