As part of an International Cooperation Agreement between the National Heritage Institute (INP) and the University of La Rochelle (France), an archaeological mission in the field took place from April 28 to May 22, 2025 on the ancient site of Thapsus, located in the Bekalta delegation (Monastir governorate).
This research project brought together researchers and specialists from Tunisia, France, Spain and Italy, as well as a group of heritage and students from the universities of Tunis, Manouba, Sousse and Sfax.
The work has enabled the continuation of excavations on the site, accompanied by surveys for the study of archaeological layers, conventional and geophysical surveys in the area and its immediate surroundings.
Drone aerial thermal shots, as well as architectural and topographic surveys, were also carried out, in addition to the study and inventory of the artefacts uncovered.
These activities have helped to better document the evolution stages of the ancient city of Tapsus, in particular by highlighting a Punic urban occupation dating back to the middle of the 5th century BC.
