The Minister of Health, Mustapha Ferjani, announced on August 25, 2025 the official opening of a specialty of geriatrics. A reform deemed “historic” to meet the challenge of aging the Tunisian population.

Meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Health, medical officials, experts and authorities have validated the integration of geriatrics as a new medical specialty.

The reform provides for a five -year university course, a revision of article 341 and the establishment of a national piloting body.

A decisive step to strengthen the care of seniors in Tunisia.

Adapt the care system …

The Ministry of Health stresses that this initiative responds to the need to adapt the healthcare system to the aging of the Tunisian population.

Representatives of the Order of Doctors and the Tunisian Society of Geriatrics speak of a major advance for the supply of care. They believe that this recognition will “retain skills” and structure a previously marginalized discipline.

… To the aging of the population

With the rapid aging of the Tunisian population, age -related pathologies are gaining space in the health system. Until now, the absence of an official specialty in geriatrics has obliged practitioners to train abroad or to work without a recognized framework.

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Tunisian life expectancy will exceed 82 years by 2030. According to the same projections, those over 60 will constitute 15.2% of the population in 2030 and even 20% in 2040.
