Tunisia: Entering large quantities of food products unfit for consumption

The teams of the National Food Safety Instance (INSSPA) proceeded, following a series of intensive control campaigns carried out in coordination with the security services, to seize significant quantities of meats and food products that are not compliant in several governorates, according to a press release published this Wednesday by the body.

In the governorate of Béja, the control agents seized a cow slaughtered of 200 kg transported in a vehicle and with symptoms of hepatitis (jaundice), making it dangerous for the health of the consumer. The carcass was destroyed by health burial at the municipal discharge of Béja.

In addition, 1,500 kg of traditional Harissa “Diari” were seized. The product was packaged in plastic containers not adapted to food contact, brought non -compliant labels and part of the lots did not mention the production date.

In the governorates of Siliana and Manouba, the control teams seized respectively 942 kg of living chickens (about 300 poultry) of unknown origin and devoid of veterinary certificates, as well as 839 kg of products including 670 kg of poultry meats and 169 kg of living chickens in a clandestine slaughterhouse sanitary facilities.

In Tunis, the controllers seized 1,856 liters of liquids, including 1,108 liters of vinegar, 700 liters of caramel concentrate and 48 bottles of orange blossom water packaged in plastic containers unsuitable for food contact. The products were stored in a underground warehouse without minimum safety conditions.

Finally, in the governorate of Bizerte, 95 kg of foodstuffs were seized in a restaurant-tea restaurant: 44 kg of cut and frozen lemons, 2.5 kg of frozen beaten eggs, 3.5 kg of cooked lasagna and 45 kg of pastries kept in non-hygienic conditions.
