The Parliamentary Cooperation Commission with the countries of the American continent held, this Monday, September 15, 2025, an advisory meeting chaired by Ibrahim Bouderbala, president of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP), to examine the state of Tunisian-American relations in the light of the recent declarations of the new designated ambassador of the United States in Tunis before the Congress, as well as a bill presented by two American representatives entitled “Restoration of Tunisian democracy”.

The deputies welcomed the positive aspects of the speech of the designated ambassador to the United States Foreign Affairs Committee, while expressing their astonishment in the face of the fight against terrorism, when he spoke of his intention to slow down the infiltration of terrorist elements from the neighboring countries of Tunisia. They considered this declaration as a sprain to diplomatic uses and an infringement of Tunisia relations with its neighboring countries.

On the other hand, parliamentarians expressed their deep dissatisfaction with the bill submitted to the American Congress, which they deemed offensive for Tunisia and attacks on the history of friendship relations between the two countries. They recalled that these relations date back to the signing of the first peace and friendship treaty in 1797, and cited several significant milestones, including the visit of the American president Dwighthower in 1959, that of President Habib Bourguiba in Washington in 1961, as well as the signing of a strategic partnership in 2015.

Ibrahim Bouderbala, for its part, estimated that the two American elected officials ignore the reality of the Tunisian situation, affirming that the country has definitively turned the page on authoritarianism since July 25, 2021 and initiated a new phase focused on the completion of the democratic process, the consolidation of human rights and the construction of a rule of law, despite a difficult economic and social context.

The members of the Commission finally denounced a “bias” bill and “far from Tunisian political reality”, which they consider as interference in internal affairs and an attack on national sovereignty. They called to put an end to this type of initiatives which they describe as “toxic” and assured that they will in no way affect the solidity of the links between the Tunisian and American peoples.
