Faced with the acceleration of marine erosion, the Littoral Protection and Development Agency (APAL) intends to take up its ambition by protecting 15 % of the Tunisian coast by 2030. A major challenge, supported by international donations and intended to strengthen regional development.

The Littoral Protection and Development Agency (APAL) aims to strengthen its efforts against marine erosion in Tunisia, with a protective target of 15 % of the threatened coasts by 2030. Currently, only 10 % of the vulnerable coastline benefits from safeguard measures.

This was said that Mohamed Ali Turki, Apal Technical Director, said during a hearing session organized Tuesday by the Commission of Productive Sectors at the National Council of Regions and Districts. He stressed that the protection of Tunisian beaches requires heavy investments and continuous maintenance, efforts often supported by international funding in the form of donations.

According to Turki, the regions that have benefited from protection projects have recorded notable environmental improvements, accompanied by a revival of tourism and economic activity, thus contributing to the revival of regional development.

The achievements of the Apal include the implementation of rocky dikes and artificial recharging in sand of the beaches threatened by erosion. However, the deputies expressed their concern in the face of the challenges encountered by the agency, calling for an intensification of awareness campaigns through the media and civil society. They also insisted on the need to rely on concrete indicators to measure the real impact of projects.
