The Tunisian customs services, in coordination with the security forces, foiled an attempt to illegally remove an archaeological piece from the national territory, as part of the protection of Tunisian cultural heritage.
According to a press release published Thursday by Tunisian Customs, a stone sculpture representing a lion’s head was seized at Enfidha airport from a traveler of foreign nationality, who was preparing to take it in his luggage for illicit export.
The piece was subjected to examination by the National Heritage Institute, which confirmed its historical and archaeological value.
A report was drawn up, and the sculpture was handed over to the services of the National Heritage Institute for its conservation and for the necessary procedures concerning its legal status.
This operation underlines the importance of customs controls and the vigilance of the Tunisian authorities for the preservation of the country’s rich cultural heritage.
