Tunisia adopts a new strategic framework for civil nuclear energy

Under the chairmanship of Moncef BelaidMinister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and President of the National Atomic Energy Commission,, A meeting was held on September 1, 2025 at the ministry’s headquartersin the presence of Haithem EssaghirDirector General of the National Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technology, as well as representatives of various organizations and ministries.

At the heart of the discussions was the Validation of the framework program 2025-2029developed as part of the partnership between Tunisia andInternational Atomic Energy Agency (AIEA).

This strategic document will serve as a reference to guide the uses of nuclear sciences and technology at the service of national development priorities and Sustainable development objectives (SDG). It also constitutes a guarantee of an appeal safe, responsible and in accordance with international commitments of Tunisia in the nuclear field.

The meeting also emphasized the need foraccelerate the adoption of the draft framework relating to peaceful uses of atomic energy and nuclear technologiesin order to provide the country with a suitable legal framework.

Participants also insisted on monitoring the technical cooperation program between Tunisia and AIEA, especially for Strengthen national nuclear security capacity And fight against illicit use of radioactive materials.
