At the Bir El Kassaa wholesale market, the prices of different fruits and fish experienced a considerable increase between May 2024 and May 2025. This is the observation made by the National Observatory of Agriculture (UNAGRI).
The observation is final. In one year, the prices of many fresh products reached heights at the Bir El Kassaa wholesale market, the main point of reference for the Tunisian markets. This is revealed by the last report of the National Observatory of Agriculture (ONAGRI), published Thursday.
At the top of this galloping inflation: the oranges, whose average price went from 752 millimes in May 2024 to 3014 millimes in May 2025, a vertiginous increase of +301%. Lemon follows with a surge of +195%, reaching 1980 millimes per kilo, while the apples crossed the 4800 millimes mark, displaying an increase of +114%.
Generalized increases on fruit
In addition to citrus fruits, apricots saw their price jump 90% to 3811 millimes, and fisheries from 29% to 2769 millimes. Even seasonal fruits such as melon (+20%), strawberries (+19%) or almonds (+8%) have not escaped upwards.
According to the ONAGRI, certain varieties of oranges have even recorded even more marked deviations, with prices oscillating between 1561 and 3323 millimes, i.e. a variation between +53% and +134% depending on the types.
Vegetables are not spared
On the vegetable side, the trend is also upward. The potatoes display a bundle of +74%, at 1699 millimes per kilo. The onions follow with+19%, parsley (+11%) and fennel (+59%).
Some exceptions, however: some products have undergone a withdrawal, including sweet pepper (-33%), zucchini (-21%), cucumber (-12%) and tomatoes (-11%), translating a more abundant supply or declining demand.
Fish also on a ascending slope
The fishery sector also undergoes the effects of this generalized inflation. The prices of the red mullet (+38%), chipper (+33%), pageot (+24%), and octopus (+22%) have all experienced a significant increase. Same observation for the merlan and the mule, the prices of which increased by 19% each, reaching 18,285 and 10,886 millimes respectively per kilo.
